For various reasons, I have decided to decrease my in-person academic/conference travel by increasing "virtual visits" via Skype, Zoom, or other web conferencing services. I would be very happy to see this type of policy grow or spread. Please reach out if you have any ideas to help in such an effort.
The primary motivation is the imperative to reduce climate harms. But an academic cultural shift to virtual conferencing brings other benefits, including increasing access for those from remote locations or with less institutional support.
One cost of this policy is the inevitable reduction in personal connection offered through in-person meetings. To partially remedy that effect, I have committed to reserve three hours of ad hoc meetings during each day of a "virtual visit." I have found that this special designation does have some effect, connecting me with people who I have not previously met.
